Ultrasonography

Ultrasound is the use of sound waves which go through the body and bounce back to the probe of the ultrasound machine creating images of the internal organs. It is a painless and safe procedure. Some of the organs that can be imaged are the breast, thyroid, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, uterus, ovaries, testicles, appendix and bladder.

Also by using a special mechanism, called Doppler, the blood flow through the arteries and veins can be assessed. When specifically imaging the carotid arteries in the neck, blockage can be detected that can cause problems in the future. Detecting blood clots in the veins is another use for ultrasound.

When imaging the expectant woman, the baby can be checked for deformities and other birth defects. The gender can sometime be determinedwith the cooperation of the baby. The picture of the baby is often given to the expectant parents.
